The new normal

The last few months have been anything but normal.

When the Control Movement Order was announced on 16th March 2020, Malaysians in every part of the country were left rather somewhat clueless. The Covid-19 Pandemic was spreading at a dangerous rate and we were headed into unprecedented and unknown times.  

It's been an odd time to say the least but fast forward two months later and we now find ourselves adapting and adjusting to the new normal. Wearing a face mask before going out is now automatic and washing your hands (or sanitizing) has become routine.

On the golf front, golfers too have started returning to the course (from 12th May 2020) albeit with new conditions and regulations. That said, I have self imposed a break from golf until the condition movement control order expires on 9th June (or longer if it is extended). 

I envy my mates who have started teeing it up but I tell myself "there's plenty of time in the future for golf". Perhaps I am in denial, but I guess there's no harm in playing it safe for now. 

In other news, the PGA restarts the season in a few weeks at the Charles Schwab Challenge. All top 5 players in the OGWR (Rory, Jon Rahm, BK, JT and DJ) have committed to play so it promises to be a deep field. Haven't read about fan policy but it's definitely something new. I guess if I am not playing, it will be nice to watch some golf on the telly.

Gawai Golf / Open House @ Samarahan Country Club

Last weekend, I took part in the Gawai Golf Tournament held at the Samarahan Country Club.

I managed to squeeze in a range session and a 9 hole round during the week. The game seemed intact so I was feeling pretty good. 

You couldn't have asked for better weather and the course conditions were (though wet in places) pretty good. The greens in particular were rolling true. My mate and I even spent some time at the range and warmed up with a couple of balls. 

My flight teed off from the 15th hole, a longish par 3 (some 170 meters from the blue tee) with water on the left to contend with. I play on this course almost every week and I had been scoring well here the last few weeks. But as nerves would have it, I proceeded to hit a high hook and promptly found the water. Great. My first shot of the day and I find the drink. So I take a drop and manage to escape with a bogey. 

That unfortunately set the tone of the day pretty much. Scores would be calculated using the Stableford method. So even though I managed 5 pars, I imploded on a number of holes (managed a disastrous 10 on the 10th hole) and ended up scoring 102. A case of the nerves really which was rather disappointing, so I need to sort out what goes on between the ears soon. 

But there were some (yes, some) positives to take back and all things considered, I had a pretty good time. There were no entrance fees, so all we had to pay was RM25.00 for the buggy fee and we were treated to a very nice lunch spread and in true Gawai Spirit, the drinkers were very entertained with the ample beer that was served. 

Then came the prize giving and what do you know, I snagged a consolation prize (golf towel) for my efforts. 

Gawai will soon be here (1-2.06.2016) so next week will be a short work week. The highlight of which will be a trip to Jakarta with my KL golf crew for three rounds of golf. Really looking forward to it.

Also underwent some equipment changes in the bag, but I will blog about that another time. 

Where did the days go?

It's been a very busy few weeks. Last weekend in particularswas pretty rough but things are starting to look up. 

On Friday the kakigolf crew make our long awaited trip to ... Langkawi! Where we will take on the highly rated Els Datai golf course. I have been wanting to play there forever! so I am looking forward to it.

Reporting in!

Hope you're all playing plenty of golf wherever you are. I haven't touched my clubs in two weeks due to the wet weather and travel so I am looking forward to hitting the course tomorrow. (Please don't rain!) Hoping the game hasn't deserted me too.

Last week's weather was pretty crazy. The heavy and constant rain caused flash floods in most parts of the Kuching and although the floods have receded, it's still very wet! From what I have heard, course conditions at Kelab Golf Sarawak are really really soggy. Samarahan Country Club seems to be holding up in spite of the rain fall so let's see how it plays out tomorrow.

In other news, it's nice to see Phil Mickelson playing much better then he did last season. Let's see how he does over the weekend at the Blue Monster.

I am back!

I am back!

Things were pretty busy prior to the Chinese New Year break so I apologize for the lack of updates. 

I am not big on the whole Chinese New Year thing so instead of visiting, I head to the golf course! We had plenty of rain here in Kuching but that didn't stop us from golfing on day 2 of the CNY.

This is hole 11 at the Samarahan Country Club. The water level is usually much lower through out the course. Although wet in places, both the Jungle and Garden 9s were very playable. In such rainy conditions, it really is a testament to the course conditions.

Also played on day 3 and the water levels had receded by then. The great thing about playing during the CNY? there were hardly any other golfers on the course and the weather was fantastic too.

In other news, Hideki Matsuyama came out on top after beating Rickie Fowler in a 4 hole play off to notch his second PGA tour win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. 

I have always envied Hideki's swing. His back swing and that short pause at the top in particular is poetry in motion.

On the telly, his swing looks a tad slow, but watch it live and you will see just how fast he's turning through the ball. The clip below is from his practice round last October during the CIMB Classic 2015.

The Maybank Championship is happening next week, but I have decided to skip it this year. Hope everyone is well and playing lots of golf!

Uniqlo Golf

When it comes to fashion on the course, there are three categories, loud! couldn't care less and classy.

This is 2 time major winner, John Daly, well known for his loud! fashion sense (amongst other things)

Then there's 2013 Masters Champion, Adam Scott. It wasn't until the Masters in 2013 that I realized Adam Scott was signed on as Uniqlo's to brand ambassador. 

They couldn't have picked a better individual. He's talented and is always immaculately dressed on the course. Check out the Adam Scott range here.

I have always liked Uniqlo. From t-shirts to formal wear, they have clothing for kids, adults, male and female that feature modern and comfortable designs at affordable prices.

I was liking the polo shorts and pants that Adam Scott had been hearing and so set out to find them which was surprisingly difficult. I checked Uniqlo stores in Kl, Singapore and even Thailand and had no luck. For some reason that particular store did not carry that range of clothing.  

During my last trip to K.L in December, I checked out the Uniqlo store at the KLCC mall and was stoked to see the Dry-Ex polo shirts in stock, at a promo price of RM49.90 (RRP RM79.90) too! Pity though they didn't carry the Men Dry Stretch Pants. (why don't you have these in all your stores Uniqlo?!)

There are a number of colours / designs available and needless to say I bought a couple. They were a steal at that price to be honest. Only difference with the ones Adam Scott wears is that there isn't a Uniqlo badge on the left chest.

Uniqlo describe the Dry Ex Polo shirt as such :

"This high-tech men's polo is made with our revolutionary new DRY-EX material, so it dries sweat amazingly quickly to keep you feeling smooth, dry, and comfortable."

But how would they perform in our hot and humid weather? The last thing I wanted was to be sweat soaked the entire  round. It's icky and uncomfortable.

I was liking it from the start. Nice design and cutting made it very comfortable to wear. The material was smooth and light and I had no trouble moving around. 

To quote Adam Scott from an interview, "It's admirable how they're able to produce such high-quality clothing at such an affordable price."

It was a very hot and sunny Saturday morning that day, so it was perfect conditions for testing. 

You know what? They weren't kidding when they said it dries sweat amazingly quickly. Although I was sweating, it stayed generally dry and light throughout and I was pretty impressed. 

If you're wondering why I am raving / reviewing a shirt, try playing in a sweat soaked shirt and you will know why it's important.

Uniqlo has sinced opened up two stores here in Kuching. (Not sure if they carry this range and I would be very surprised if they did) But if you're in Malaysia and there isn't a Uniqlo near you? Shop at the online store here. 

Delivery is free for purchases over RM150.00 and I recently purchased a pair of their Dry Stretch Pants for RM120.00 (RRP RM149.90) during the boxing day sale. Very comfy as well. 

Don't get me wrong, there are other brands out there that are just as good and just as nice but you would be hard pressed to find a better shirt for less then RM100.00.

So while you may not play like Adam Scott, you can at least dress like him now. 

Golf Resolutions

Kp New Year Resolutions are rather cliche, so I don't make them.

This year however, I have set out to make just one Golf New Year Resolution! Play smarter golf.

Looking back on my game in 2015, I realized that I am rather capable of blowing up (in spectacular fashion) on a single hole. 

For instance, I would card an 8 on a par 4 or a 9 or worse on a par 5. From then on, it's all about recovery and damage control.

The issue really was how I dealt with a problem. For instance, I would lose my drive off the tee and think "aggressive" for my third shot only to lose it as well. Or I would find myself in the deep rough or a difficult lie and still decide to 'go for it', thinking high-risk, high-reward, which hardly paid off. 

So this year, I resolve to be less of hero and play smarter golf. When caught in a tight spot, my first priority will be to get the ball back in play.

Fresh start so I will report back after a couple of rounds with an update!

Farewell 2015

In a short few hours we will bid 2015 farewell. So, in keeping with tradition, here's a post to recollect a couple of the golfing highlights in 2015.

1. Earlier in February, I attended the Maybank Malaysian Open 2015 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, catching the stars from the European Tour, Asian Tour and our Local pros in action. Anirban Lahiri played superbly on the last day to bag his biggest win.

2. In May, the PGM / Asian Development Tour rolled into town for the PGM MNRB Sarawak Championship, where I caught up with my mate Chris and met ADT players, Nick and Greg. Good times.

4. In August, I participated in the Kuching leg of the BMW International Golf Cup 2015 at the Samarahan Country Club and managed 1st runner up in the nett - guest category. My first time winning something in a golf tournament! (well there was that wooden spoon one time..)

5. October was a literally golf month and we start off with the Sime Darby LPGA 2015. Attended for the first time and it was really fun seeing the stars of the LPGA in action. Jessica Korda, snapped a winless streak with some superb golf over the four days.

6. At the end of October came the biggest Malaysian golfing event in 2015. The CIMB Classic. I have attended twice as a spectator and this year, I volunteered and had an absolutely smashing time. Met with some of the biggest stars in the game and saw the action up close from behind the ropes. I am looking forward to CIMB Classic 2016 already!

Needless to say it's been a really fantastic golfing year for me and I am very thankful.

Under the weather.

What's worse then being sick? Being sick right before the weekend. 

I have tried in the past to foolishly play whilst sick and it never works out well.

Sucks that I am starting to find a semblance of consistency in my game so I was hoping to get as much game time as possible.

Oh well. Hope the rest of you are playing tomorrow!

What a week it's been!

The final round of the CIMB Classic concluded just last Sunday and I am missing CIMB Classic week already. 

Volunteering at the CIMB Classic 2015 has been a fantastic experience.

Along the way, I have had the chance to see things from behind the ropes. I have also met with and seen some the biggest names in Golf in action up close.

 

I have had the opportunity to meet several amazing people and made a bunch of new friends. The volunteer program is a fine example of true teamwork and I am glad to have had a small part to play.  

I am not going to lie though. It was a pretty tough week (a typical day starts from 4am-6pm) and there were definitely some up and downs, but it was alot of fun and at the end of every day, it was immensely gratifying to see everything come together. 

The above said, none of this would have been possible if it wasn't for the hard work of every dedicated volunteer. It was a collective effort and I am very proud to have been a part of it.

There were so many of us, but I want to thank firstly the members in Group H. Guys and Gals (you know who you are), you were amazing throughout the week. I cannot thank you enough for stepping up when needed and for that, you have my sincere thanks and utmost appreciation.

My fellow hole Captains, Johari, Faizal, Din, Prithpal, Kishen, Chris. H, Chris. S, Lukas, Jack and Gary, thank you for all the laughs, help and guidance throughout the week. You guys are number 1! 

To the ladies who worked overtime behind the scenes, Terry, Aishah and Shandi, thank you!

Lastly, Emma and Nick, thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing experience. The tireless work that the both of you do made our jobs so much easier and is truly appreciated. You both are awesome and I am convinced that there is no one more suited for the job!

The Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2015

What a weekend it's been!

Managed to catch days 3 and 4 of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Tournament at the KLGCC and man was it a good experience.

In the end, it was Jessica Korda, who clinched Victory on the East Course to win by 4 strokes. Played 4 really solid rounds of golf and thoroughly deserved the win. Followed Jessica's flight on day 3 for a while (together with Lydia Ko and Haru Nomura) and she can hit it really long!

Congratulations once again Jessica! 

Watching the stars of the LPGA in action up close was a real treat and the cherry on top? getting autographs and 'wefies' with some of these talented and friendly ladies. Always ready with a smile and happy to oblige for autographs.

With the tournament extended for a further 3 years, you bet I will be back next year.

Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2015

October is here and that means it's time for the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2015 (9-11.10.2015) and the CIMB Classic 2015 (29.10-1.11) at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

A couple of weeks ago, I won weekend passes to the Sime Darby LPGA tournament from MST's facebook contest and I am looking forward to watching it for the first time.

However, there's the elephant in the room that we need to address. This bloody HAZE!!

At this rate, it doesn't look like the Haze is going anywhere and with the Sime Darby LPGA starting on Thursday (4 days ) time, the Tournament Committee have issued a statement.

In short, if the Haze doesn't improve.. there's a big chance the tournament won't go on.. =((((

So I am definitely hoping.. that the Haze magically disappears this week. It would be a huge shame if such a big tournament doesn't go on.

2015 - The year of Jordan Spieth

 Jordan's had a phenomenal 2015 season. 

Let's have a closer look. He notched up 5 wins:

1. Valspar Championship
2. The Masters Tournament
3. The U.S Open
4. John Deere Classic 
5. Tour Championship 

(Consisting of two Majors and the Fed Ex Cup) 

He played better then anyone at the Majors:

Masters Tournament - WIN
U.S Open - WIN
The Open Championship - Tied 4th
PGA Championship - 2nd

He's earned a staggering amount banking in more then $12 million this season alone. (This excludes the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus - seriously!?) and with the win at East Lake, Jordan returns to the top as the No.1 golfer in the world, once more. 

If that ain't enough, he's definitely locked in for the Player of the year (POTY) award too. 

But do you know what's the scary / crazy / amazing thing? 

He's only 22 years old.

A funny / good golf week

Maybe it's the haze... but I have had a pretty good golfing week.

On Thursday, I carded much a needed 89. It's been a while since I had a sub-90 round so I was rather pleased.

This morning, we had another round (albeit in thicker haze) and I somehow, scored an 84 which was an achievement of sorts. 

For starters, it was the lowest round that I had ever played (I kid you not) and having started on the Garden 9, I made the turn in 38. Which, was also my lowest ever score for the front 9. It would have been lower if I didn't miss a few putts on the back 9, but hey I am not complaining. 

I have had somewhat of an odd run over the last 2 months or so. Leading up to the BMW Cup, the game was feeling really good and I was particularly happy with how I was striking my irons. Was playing in the low 90's which was good. 

Then in just a few short weeks later, the iron game came undone and nothing was right. And yet somehow and out of the blue, two sub-90 rounds in a week. 

Here's hoping the consistency / streak will continue.

October beckons!

October beckons and it's going to be a busy golf month! 

First up is the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament where the stars of the LPGA (Lydia Ko, Michelle Wie, Inbee Park amongst others, will 'golf' it out at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club from from 7 - 11th October 2015. 

Then  at the end of the month (27th October - 1st November 2015) there's the inaugural CIMB Classic 2015 where two-time champion Ryan Moore will be defending his trophy against other formidable PGA stars in the likes of Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed amongst others also at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.   

I will be attending the CIMB as I have done in the last two years but this time things are going to be a bit different. Plenty of updates then! 

Also hope to catch the Sime Darby tournament since I won a pair of weekend passes from MST.

In other news, the lads and I made for the fairways today and played through the Haze that's still blanketing our fair city. 

Managed to improve on last week's score, a reverse really, from a 98 to a much welcomed 89. Managed a couple of pars and even squeeze in a Birdie on the Par 5, 4th at SCC. Would have been better except I managed to blow two holes and carded a Double Par on the par 4, 11th and a Triple bogey 8 on the par 5, 17th. I really need to reduce these silly errors. 

This week is a short one and we are hoping the haze will clear up before we play again on Saturday. 

A weekend of golf and a matter of sportsmanship

We have been getting a fair bit of rain the last few days, so the weather here in Kuching has greatly improved. 

So on Saturday morning, our weekly golf session resumed at the Samarahan Country Club and golf being golf. I managed a (poor, could have been much better) 98. Which consisted of a very mixed bag of 6 pars and an 8 on the par 3, 15th. 

After sending two tee shots into the watery hazard I 'finally' convinced my ego to take a drop. Foolish mistake really. My iron game has gone rather haywire too. Gone are the days (not too long ago in fact) where I was confident and striking my iron shots flush. Just one of those patches I suppose.

In other news, can anyone stop Jason Day? He is clearly on fire having clinched the BMW Championship by 6 strokes and ascended to the No.1 along with his fine victory. What a run he's had since breaking through at the PGA Championship. Well deserved.

More interesting was the Solheim Cup where team USA staged one of the greatest comeback in competition. On the final day, singles, team USA earned a staggering 8.5 points to snatch the cup back from Team Europe who appeared to be cruising to a cushy victory.

A fantastic victory for the Americans no less but the controversy on the 17th hole during the fourball match between Lincicome/Lee - Pettersen/Hull will remain a sore talking point. 

Did Allison Lee make a mistake? Yes, she did unfortunately. In a competition where the stakes are this high, get concrete confirmation that a putt is given, don't assume your opponent has conceded. Why risk it? Rules are rules. 

But what about sportsmanship?

Everyone's had their say and the majority feel the same way that I do. That it was poor sportsmanship on Team Europe's part.

From what I have read and gathered, Suzann and Charley both insisted they never conceded the putt. 

Apart from Allison who "thought" she heard someone say it was 'good', no one else heard anything. So, chances are no one said 'anything'. 

But let's look at conduct. How quickly did Charley walk away right after Alison misses? and how far Suzann was?

To be clear though, it was certainly Allison's mistake to assume that the putt had been given. But in being so competitive and stringent to the rules, Suzann wasn't acting in the spirit of the game and that was her mistake.

But at the end of the day, perhaps that was what Team America needed to find that extra gear and kick start their comeback. And what a comeback it was. Superb display from the Americans and it was a fitting finish in the end.

Allison burried the controversy from the morning, winning her singles match in good fashion. 

Angela Stanford (who has the worse Solheim Cup record) taking down villain of the hour Suzann Pettersen.

With the Cup on the line, often criticized, Captain's pick, Paula Creamer secured the winning point by whooping Sandra Gal to clinch victory for the Americans and justifying her Captain's faith in her.

Can't imagine how it will be the next time Suzann tees it up at an LPGA event or worse, when shes grouped with either Allison Lee or Brittany Lincicome or anyone from the American team for that matter. Yikes!

It's never easy to apologize, especially in the manner that she did. I definitely respect that. Big of her really.




 

Srixon Q-Star.

I have been gaming the Srixon Q-Star since the BMW Cup and why wouldn't you want to stick with a prize winning ball? Haha. In truth though, I was very pleased with how it performed on and around the greens. Even managed a couple of back spins too. Try doing that with your usual used ball.

Before the Q-Star I was gaming the Ad-333 which was also a good ball and I got a couple of boxes for cheap. RM53.00 per box at RGT Technology Sdn. Bhd, but they are now retailing for RM100.00 for two boxes if you are keen. 

Anyways before I get too carried away and before the mob come yelling "Oi! it doesn't matter what used/new ball you use if you're not a single handicapper!" I better get to the real reason for this post. 

Now, the Srixon Q-Star has been replaced with a new model with new spin skin technology. So what do retailers do with last season's stock of balls? they discount them!

A couple of months ago, a box of Q-Star balls cost RM115.00 at Pan-West which translates to about RM9.60 per ball. Now comes the best part a.k.a 'Kangtao'.

When you get there, check out the golf balls in the perspex clear boxes near the cashier and take a closer look.

They are usually filled with 'cheaper balls' so I didn't even give them a second glance until Kenny, my golf kaki said "Dude, check it out, Q-Star balls yo."

Brand spanking new Q-Star balls and they were going for just RM3.00 a ball. You read that correctly.

These aren't the latest spin skin balls and there's no packaging but why would you need it anyway? They are cheap and we bought a bunch to last us a while (won't say how many though :P)

Where I am from, a reasonably good used ball will usually cost between RM1.50 - RM2.50 (depending on brand). So for just a little more, why wouldn't you get new ones? You won't find a better ball for this price!
